DURHAM, NC – A press conference will be held on Saturday at a location near the place a young man was recently found dead in Durham. While the death may not have been caused by an act of physical violence, organizers for the Durham Stop Killing Us March & Rally say it exemplifies a breakdown of the “village” and how an avalanche of societal ills are “Killing” those who struggle daily against institutional racism, classism, and economic injustice.
Jesus Uniting Souls To Increase Community Engagement (JUSTICE) Ministration, the Stop Killing Us (SKU) Solutions Campaign, and a coalition of JUSTICE Partners will hold the Durham Stop Killing Us March & Rally on Saturday, June 2, one week following the press conference.
The June 2nd event will begin at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of Perry Point at Hayti business complex located at 601 Fayetteville St.
Following a brief pre-march rally, around 10:30 a.m. the march will take place on a route which includes areas once known as the successful Black Hayti Community and Durham’s Black Wall St. where over 120 African-American-owned business once flourished.
“We must reintroduce or remind a new generation of this historical foundation of excellence and faith we stand upon, in order that we unite and go forward with a new intolerance for neighborhood violence, early-death, wickedness, and destruction,” said Rev. Curtis E. Gatewood, Founder & President of JUSTICE Ministration & SKU.
Abdul Burnette, the SKU Durham Neighborhood & Area Representative was personally touched by the recent death which took place where the press conference will be held on Sat., May 26.
Burnette and others touched by violence will speak at the press event to call upon support for the upcoming Durham march and the ongoing SKU movement.
